After losing to a strong Dunbar team, the first team headed off to Slateford to face Civil Service 2.
In weather best described as “biblical,” and a location one might called “secluded,” the first challenge was to get all 6 players to the venue on time.
(Or, in David King’s case, “roughly on time.”)
We got off to a rocky start, with Mike blundering early on board one. But, with Maurice and Shahul taking advantage of the white pieces, we took a 2-1 lead.
Steve offered his opponent a draw in a level endgame. But his opponent declined it… only to go wrong and lose.
So, 3-1 up and all the attention turned to Ronnie and David’s games.
David converted a pawn advantage in a king endgame. And, 30 minutes after turning down a draw offer, Ronnie’s opponent finally agreed the position was drawn.
(There were only kings left on the board.)
So, a 4.5-1.5 win for Musselburgh. That puts us on 2 points from 4 games.
